Subsea-tunnel to Sandoy

The biggest ever Faroese financial initiative was put into effect today. Starting ultimo 2009, they will make a tunnel between Streymoy and Sandoy, and the cost will be approx. 690 mio. kr. (136363168.11 USD.). This is a part of a larger plan, which involves a subsea-tunnel to Suðuroy, somewhere in a fairly distant future.

How long is this tunnel suppose to be?? I don't understand the cost. Here we are looking at replacing one of our bridges (2310 meters) over a lake at a cost of 3.4 - 4.4 BILLION dollars. (17,000,000,000 - 22,000,000,000 DK) It just seems that the cost for your tunnel is nothing compared to what we look at the cost over here.

A tunnel to Suðuroy? Dang! That could set you back some Kroners.

The tunnel to Sandoy is an estimated 10 kilometres long.

That's nothing compared to a tunnel to Suduroy. Depending on how it was built we could be talking well over 20K. A small chunnel.

I'm normally a commentator here, but I'm so fascinated with all the tunnels linking the various parts of the islands.
